A facelift is a medical surgery technique that is clinically known as Rhytidectomy.

It is a procedure that is used to reduce the facial wrinkles and other telltale signs of aging, with the goal of enhancing the overall shape of the face and jaw. Facelift surgery can effectively help to reverse the harmful effects of time, stress, and exposure to the elements. To perform facelift surgery, a plastic surgeon will lift and tighten the underlying muscles of the face to build more aesthetically pleasing contours and rejuvenate the facial structure. After that, the surgeon will precisely remove excess layers of fat and skin that can contribute a tired appearance.

A proficient plastic surgeon can perform this surgery with an artistic eye and exceptional attention to detail in order to provide the client with a natural and long-lasting appearance without any scars. In addition to traditional full facelifts, there are several other varieties of the procedure to address specific areas of the face. Many surgeons use advanced and minimally invasive techniques to minimize discomfort and downtime.

What facelift surgery actually does?

The loss of youthful contours in the face can occur due to a lot of factors that include thinning of the skin, loss of facial fat, gravity, sun damage, smoking, as well as heredity and stress.

A facelift improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as:

  • Turkey neck: Excess fat of the neck and loose skin and that can appear as a double chin or "turkey neck"
  • Sagging facial skin
  • Fold lines that appear at the corner of the nose and mouth
  • Fat layers that have fallen or has disappeared
  • Jowls developing in the cheeks and jaw
Other procedures that might be performed in combination with a facelift are brow lift and eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes. Fat transfer or fillers may be suggested to restore the lost fatty volume.
Who is a good candidate for facelift surgery?

In general, good candidates for facelift surgery should be:

  • Healthy people who do not have any medical conditions that impair healing
  • You should be a Nonsmoker or recommended you quit smoking before this surgery.
  • This surgery is good for individuals with a positive outlook and realistic expectations
What are the steps of facelift surgery?

A facelift surgery includes the following steps:

Anesthesia: Medications are given for your comfort throughout the surgical procedure. The options include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Your facelift doctor will do some necessary check-ups and will recommend the best option for you.

There are a variety of other methods that can further enhance the outcome of a facelift. They include:

  • Facial implants or fat transfer to improve the contour Resurfacing procedures to develop the tone and texture of facial skin
  • Laser or peel resurfacing procedures to develop the tone and texture of facial skin.
  • Fat or fillers are injected in order to reduce wrinkles.

The incision: Depending on how much alteration you want to achieve, you will get some facelift choices that include a traditional facelift, limited incision facelift or a neck lift.
A traditional facelift incision starts in the hairline at the temples and extends around the ear and ends in the lower scalp. In this technique, fat may be sculpted from the face, jowls, and neck and underlying tissue are repositioned.

A second incision under the chin will be required to further improve an aging neck. Stitches or skin adhesives are used to close these incisions. Limited incision facelift is usually applied for those patients who have less skin relaxation. In this technique, the results are less rejuvenating than a full facelift.

A neck lift addresses the sagging jowls, loose neck skin and fat accumulation under the chin. The neck lift incision often begins in front of the ear lobe and wraps around behind the ear, and ends in the posterior hair behind the ear.

Close the incisions: The incisions will be closed with sutures that may dissolve or may need to be removed after a few days. Some surgeons use skin glues to seal the incisions. When it is healed, the incision lines from a facelift are well covered within the hairline and in the natural contours of the face and ear.
